A Creamy, Zesty Mexican Favorite.
Guacamole is a traditional Mexican dip made from ripe avocados, mashed and seasoned with fresh lime juice, salt, and commonly mixed with finely chopped onions and cilantro. The key to great guacamole is balancing the creamy texture of the avocado with the brightness of lime and the freshness of cilantro. It’s often served with tortilla chips, tacos, or used as a topping for various dishes. Guacamole is best enjoyed fresh and can be easily adjusted to personal taste by adding ingredients like garlic, tomatoes and jalapenos, for example.
Classic Guacamole Ingredients
- 1 Ripe avocado
- ½ Tomato, chopped
- ½ Onion, chopped (red or white works)
- 1 Garlic clove, minced
- ½ Lemon
- 1 Tablespoon Fresh Cilantro, chopped
- ½ teaspoon Salt
- ¼ teaspoon Black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon Paprika
- A pinch of cumin (optional)
How to Make the Best Guacamole
- Cut the avocados in half, scoop it and add it to a big bowl (enough to mix all ingredients)
- Smash the avocados. To do so, use a fork. Do not blend the avocados. You can also leave some chunks to give some texture, I prefer it like this.
- Add all other ingredients and mix it well. Adjust the salt or lemon per your taste.
- Serve it immediately in top of bread or with tortilla chips.
Recipe Tips
How to choose ripe avocados
To know if the avocado is ripped, check for darker color avocados, slightly press them with your thumb. They should be soft, but not a lot. If they are too firm, they are not ripped yet. Finally, gently flick off the small stem at the top. If it comes off easily and reveals green underneath, the avocado is ripe. If it’s brown, the fruit is overripe.
How to store guacamole
The ideal is that you serve and consume guacamole immediately, as it tastes best fresh. However, if you have leftovers and would like to store it, add some extra lemon juice on top to slow down oxidation then press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent oxidation and browning. Store the guacamole in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days.
